Advantages:
- Better control of the environment. The air volume of the multi-span greenhouse has increased, and the fluctuation range of the indoor temperature will be reduced. The maintenance surface area of a small greenhouse is larger than the ground area, and the enclosure surface is the main way for the greenhouse to gain or lose heat, so the air temperature changes faster.
- Lower heating costs. Because the smaller the ratio of the enclosure surface area to the ground area, the smaller the heat loss. Moreover, the entire multi-span greenhouse space only needs one heating system.
- Higher land utilization. The waste of land caused by the spacing between single greenhouses has been overcome in multi-span greenhouses.
- More full utilization of internal space. In single-span greenhouses such as Quonset, the side walls are curved inclined walls, and the ground is not fully utilized. This problem does not exist in multi-span greenhouses.
- Easy to expand. The extension of the multi-span greenhouse can be easily connected to the existing greenhouse by adding several rows of gutter columns. The existing gables or side walls can be completely removed or retained as greenhouse partitions.
- Flexible partitions. Partition walls can be installed in the multi-span greenhouse to manage the greenhouse in different areas.
- Improved automation. Arm sprinkler systems, hanging basket cultivation systems, hot water heating pipes and shading systems can be installed in the multi-span greenhouse space.
- More labor-saving. In the multi-span greenhouse, workers do not have to go in and out of each greenhouse for production operations as in a single greenhouse. In addition, multi-span greenhouses can more conveniently use equipment such as forklifts, carts and monorail transportation to reduce labor.
- Multi-span greenhouses can prevent crops from being exposed to the cold outdoor air in winter during transportation. Some multi-span greenhouses can also be built very tall to meet the space requirements for loading large trailers that transport crops.
Disadvantages:
- Single planting area. Without partition walls, the greenhouse will become a single planting area, limiting the possibility of planting multiple plants at the same time.
- High initial investment.
- Plant diseases and pests are easy to spread. There is a lack of physical barriers to block pests.
- Evenly cold and hot areas may be produced. The multi-span greenhouse has a large area and is prone to dead corners, especially when a circulating fan is not used.
- Snow may accumulate in the gutter. Although the snow in the greenhouse gutter will melt when heated, it is still necessary to monitor the snow accumulation in the gutter to avoid structural damage.
